Want to share your thoughts with our customer? Tell us about your pumping experience by using the form at the bottom of the page to Submit a Review of the pump or pumps that you have used.
If you are in the early stages of pump shopping, and you are not sure which type of pump will best suit your needs, you may find it helpful to read through the articles in the Choosing a Breast Pump section before reading customer views of each pump.
Be sure that you know which of the following pump features are most important to you, and which you are willing to give up before you begin to evaluate how each of the different pump models will meet your pumping needs.
Pump Aspects to Take Notice of When Reading Reviews
-
Effectiveness – Is determined by how well the pump is able to draw milk from the breast. Generally, the closer a pump’s cycling speed (how many sucks per minute) and vacuum strength are able to mimic a nursing baby the more effective it will be at expressing milk.
-
Type of Pumping – Single pumps, both manual and electric, allow you to pump one breast at a time. Double pumps give you the option to express milk from both breasts at the same time, which helps to stimulate milk production and shortens the time needed to pump.
-
Comfort Level – If the pump is uncomfortable, it will be very challenging for you to use. Being able to adjust the pump’s cycle speed and vacuum strength is the key to achieving an acceptable comfort level.
-
Portability – How much does the pump weigh? Is it difficult to carry from place to place? Does it come with a bag or tote for packing motor and extra accessories? Does it provide a compartment or cooler for storing and cooling expressed milk?
-
Power Options – Several power options are available for electric pumps including AC adapter, battery power and car adapter. If you travel often or will need to pump in various locations, having alternative power options may be a necessity for you. While manual pumping can be tiresome, it can be a lifesaver when other power options are not available.
-
Motor Noise Level – A noisy pump motor can be a distraction to some moms while some moms worry that discretion will be compromised if those near by will be able to hear the pump.
-
Durability – Each pump is designed to handle a certain amount of pumping. Some pumps are for occasional use while others can be used several times a day everyday for a year or more. Choosing to use a pump designed for occasional pumping several times each day may cause the pump motor as well as other parts to wear out quickly.
Once you know which type of pump you will need, reading reviews written by other mothers can help you to identify each pump’s advantages and shortcomings. You can also see how the each of the pumps measure up to one another by viewing them side by side on the Breast Pumps Comparison page.
The submitted reviews below can provide you with some insight on what you can expect when using a particular pump. However, you should keep in mind that each woman’s body is different; therefore, just because something works or doesn’t work for one mother does not necessarily mean that you will have the same experience. To ensure that you are able to choose the best pump for you, you should read a variety of reviews both good and bad before making your final decision.
Avent Isis iQ Duo
- Kate B.
Worth every penny!! I highly recommend the Isis iQ Duo to any mother that plans to return to work. What I like the most about this pump is that I control it. Everybody that I knew said that they were always able to get more milk with a manual pump, but I knew that I wouldn’t have that kind of time to pump at work. I chose this pump because it lets you pump manually then you press a button and it mimics your manual pumping. The storage coolers are great for bringing milk home from work, but I also like to use them to carry milk in the diaper bag whenever I take my daughter with me to run errands or visit friends.

A real time saver! With this pump I am able to get enough milk for two of my daughter’s feedings in 10 minutes. I think that the massage cushions really help to make this pump comfortable. The bag makes it really easy to bring my Isis Duo to work everyday. My only complaint is that the motor is a bit top heavy, but I would still recommend this pump to anyone especially working moms.

Better than my first choice!! When I first decided to breastfeed I bought a Medela Pump in Style because I had heard so many good things about them, but after using it for about 4 weeks my milk supply started getting lower and lower. I got really upset because I couldn’t pump enough for my son’s daily feedings, but luckily I had extra milk stored in my freezer. A friend of mine told me that Avent had a new pump so I decided to try the Duo. It was so comfortable to use because it didn’t pull or tug on my breasts, and within two weeks I was able to build my supply back up. This pump is great!!
Avent Isis iQ Uno

Convenient and fast!! I had used the Avent Isis manual pump when my first daughter was born, but this time around I found this electric version. I find that it pumps just like the manual one, but without all the extra work on my part. With this pump I’ve been able to express at least 4 oz. of milk from each breast and in less time than when I used my manual. I’m a SAHM, and I only pump to keep an emergency supply. I would recommend this pump to other mothers, but it may be time consuming if you have to pump for all your baby’s feedings.

Ameda Purely Yours
Ameda Purely Yours with Carryall

Absolutely love this pump!! Without this pump it would have been impossible for me to continue breastfeeding my son. I can’t say that there is anything that I don’t like about this pump. It is even easy to clean. I love the fact that the tubing never needs to be washed. My sister had a Medela and always complaining about washing the tubing and waiting for it to dry out. The Purely Yours is also really lightweight as well which was a plus for me.

Worked well for me, but noisy. The Purely Yours Pump is really easy to carry around in the included bag. I really liked the idea of the built in bottle holders because I’m a bit of a klutz and I was worried that I would spill my precious milk everywhere. The holders help me out a lot. I am still surprised that I haven’t had a disastrous spill yet. The only thing that bothered me about this pump was that it was noisier than I would have liked.
Ameda Purely Yours with Backpack
- Karen
Pumps all right I chose the Ameda pump with the backpack because it was less expensive than most of its competitors. The suction on this pump is a little weaker than I thought it would be. I’m still able to pump enough for my baby, but I think that I would be able to get more had I spent a little more for a stronger pump. Also the pump motor is kind of loud. I’ve heard that the pumps with motors that are built in the bags are a lot quieter. I still plan on using this pump, but I’ll always wonder if I made the right choice.
Medela Pump in Style Original
- Sarah J.
Overall a good pump, but it took some getting use to. When I pumped for the first time with my Medela I had a hard time, but I figured that I would eventually get the hang of it. The motor is a little noisy, and it was hard to carry the heavy bag around at first. Once I got use to it I felt like a pumping pro! Which makes me really happy because I wanted my daughter to only have breast milk. I like the black carry bag that comes with this pump as well. It is very discreet, and I am able to carry it to and from work each day without any strange looks or stares.

Didn’t work for me My nipples became very sore after pumping with the Medela Pump in Style and my supply started to diminish. Each time I had to pump I became more frustrated, and I eventually had to supplement my daughter’s feedings with formula. I was not satisfied with my PIS. For me this pump definitely wasn’t worth the price.

This pump is great! All of the breastfeeding mothers that I knew recommended the Medela Pump in Style, but I was hesitant to buy it because it was a bit pricey. Since everyone raved about it I finally decided to go ahead and buy the backpack style one and boy am I glad that I did. Once I returned to work I was able to pump about 8 oz. of milk and clean the pump parts in about 20 minutes. Another thing that I love about this pump is that the backpack has extra room so I can carry other things that I need for the day.
Whisper Wear
- Julie
What a great idea! When I started looking for breast pumps I kept thinking how will I find time to pump at work everyday. I really started to worry that I wouldn’t be able to give my son breast milk after I returned to work because I’m always so busy at work, but then I found the Whisper Wear. This hands free pump was just what I needed. Using the Whisper Wear is so easy for me. I have the double model so I can pump from both breasts at the same time and still manage to get some work done. I love this pump and would recommend it to any mother that is limited on time.
- R. M.
Not as good as I hoped. I thought that I would really like this pump, but it didn’t seem to work well enough for me. I would pump for like 30 minutes and barely get 2 ounces of milk. I did like the fact that it was hands free, but I wish I could have pumped directly into bottles. I wouldn’t suggest this pump unless you are a very patient pumper.
