Susan G. Komen - For the Cure was founded in 1982 by Nancy Goodman Brinker, the younger sister of Susan Goodman Komen, a victim of breast cancer at age 36. Since its inception in 1982, the foundation has invested over $1.5 billion for research, education and health services, making it the largest breast cancer charity in the world. According to the United Nations World Health Organization, more than 500,000 people worldwide die from breast cancer every year, and breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide, making funding for this research a vital operation.
